45.
Mike Nugent and Andy Groom
As Ohio State started the 2002 season, few gave the Buckeyes
any shot of going all the way. And while defense wins championships
and offense gets the glory, the dirty work is done by special
teams. And in 2002, no one did it better than Mike Nugent
and Andy Groom.
But the road to excellence was a rocky one
for both Buckeye booters. Groom was a walk-on who had to
overcome the struggle to win a scholarship before becoming
the starter. Nugent, on the other hand, came in highly-touted,
but failed to find his footing in a frustrating freshman
season.
But by 2002 both were ready for primetime
and 23 straight field goals by Nugent and continuous clutch
punting by Groom made both of them All-Americans and key
ingredients in a season that became famous for heart stopping
heroics and nail-biting finishes.
