The Soul of the Buckeyes
The Ohio State University has been playing football for over one hundred and ten years. In that time literally thousands of players have taken the field wearing the Scarlet and Gray, earning the right to be called Buckeyes.
But while the history of Ohio State football is filled with some of the greatest players and coaches in the game, perhaps no single player personifies the great Ohio State tradition, and the spirit of the Buckeyes, more than one man: college football’s only two-time Heisman Trophy winner, Archie Griffin.
But for all of Archie Griffin’s success on the field, it stands as a testament that those closest to him remember him most for his generous nature and a desire to share his success with those around him.
Perhaps Woody Hayes summed it up best. When asked about Griffin, Hayes responded, “He’s the best player I’ve ever coached, and an even better person.”
The Heart of a Champion
For many he was the most heralded recruit to come to Columbus in years. For others, he was just another kid who was too small and too slow to make it in the big time.
But Chris Spielman not only succeeded; he set a new standard of excellence for every linebacker -- indeed every Buckeye -- that would follow in his footsteps.
And while his intensity and desire put fear into opposing teams, his commitment to class, both on the field and off, has placed him permanently in the hearts of Buckeye fans everywhere.
Oh Come Let’s Sing Ohio’s Praise …
A certain coach once said, "You win with people." That philosophy is the bedrock of Ohio State football. Names like Hayes and Harley, Griffin and Gradishar, Tatum and Spielman, and “Hopalong” and George, are a virtual roll call of college football's greatest figures.
Yet for all its individual excellence, Ohio State football is larger than any one player, coach or team. It’s historic rivalries and legendary games. It’s the thrill of championship seasons, and the pain of crushing defeats. It’s the Horseshoe, Script Ohio, Senior Tackle and Buckeye Leaves. It’s all these things … and more.
It’s over a century of pride and tradition ... a tradition that lives today.
